International Day

On the 12th June, Arnewood students from all year groups were involved in a day of activities focusing on Nepal. At the end of the day, students presented a cheque for £1500 towards the Nepal project. This photo shows students testing the properties of sheep's milk against yak's milk. For more information about the day's activities, have a look at the Nepal project page.

If you want to make a donation towards the project, you can still sponsor Mr Hummerstone's 1000 mile cycle ride: please email enquiries@arnewood.hants.sch.uk with details of your pledge.

Formal Proposal to become a Trust School

"The governing Body of The Arnewood School has now published proposals to acquire a Trust. Although this is a new category of school it remains part of the Local Authority system. The first of these schools came into operation in September 2007, following the Education and Inspection Act 2006. As a selfgoverning Trust School, The Arnewood School will continue to be able to build on the strengths of local management and the expertise of the governing Body and external partners..."

OFSTED REPORT

"The Arnewood School is a good and improving school. It has worked hard to develop an outstanding curriculum in Years 7 to 11, which is personalised to meet the needs of all its students. The school has used its specialist subject technology extremely well to substantially increase and enhance the number and quality of subject choices. Tailor-made courses have helped to raise the aspirations and confidence of less able students..."

This is how the school's OfSTED Report 2008 begins. You can read the report in full here. The inspectors have written a letter to students, which will be sent home with the latest newsletter some time this week (the week before the half term holidays).

LOWER SCHOOL PRESENTATION EVENING

Students, parents and staff gathered together for this year's second presentation evening. This time it was students in the lower school receiving the accolades, with awards being given to last year's Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 students.

YEARS 8, 12 AND 13 VISIT HAMPTON COURT

History teachers spent 2 exhilarating days at Hampton Court. On Friday, Year 12 students had a talk on Henry VIII and Wolsey from William Le Fleming. They had a look at Catherine of Aragon's bedroom and took the Young Henry tour. Year 13 students had the opportunity to roam around, taking in the State Appartments and the Royal Tennis Court.

The Year 8s enjoyed an audio guide, followed by a workshop in the Tudor kitchens. All of our students behaved brilliantly and had a really positive experience at Hampton Court. Click here to see a video compilation of photos.

YEAR 9 TEAM BUILDING ACTIVITY DAY

Five qualified professional instructors from the Army, working with Year 9 tutors, supervised activities focused on team-building, problem-solving and raising self-esteem. The day was an outstanding success, allowing tutors to bond with tutees and giving students a chance to work together in peer groups that they would not normally have the opportunity to work in.

Students described the activities as 'challenging' but 'brilliant fun'. One student said that 'it gave me the chance to do well in something that I didn't think I'd be any good at'. Seargent Taff Rees said he was 'very impressed with the enthusiasm and positivity of the Year 9 students.' He said that Arnewood is 'one of the best schools that we have ever visited.'

BEST EVER GCSE RESULTS - AGAIN!

When the GCSE results came out in August, we were delighted to see so many of our students getting the grades they needed to stay on to do further studies. It's great to see so many of them with us now in the Sixth Form.

Now that the results have been analysed, we can see that the upward trend over the last 5 years has continued - in fact, 74% of our GCSE students received 5 A*C grades. This is the second year in a row that our students have broken the record for the best-ever GCSE results at Arnewood. Well done to all of you!

YR 8 GEOGRAPHY STUDENTS VISIT THE RAINFOREST!

OK, we didn't quite make to Brazil and back in a day but a drive up the motorway to the Living Rainforest Experience is the next best thing! It was chance to see an amazing range of rainforest plants and animals and to learn how they have adapted to this incredible humid environment.

We also found out a lot about the impact of rainforest destruction, why it is taking place and how rainforests can be developed in a sustainable way.

ARDECHE

This summer we took 40 pupils from Year 11 to the south of France for a week of watersports.  Three days were spent canoeing down the Ardeche river in the Ardeche Gorge and 4 days were spent on the beach doing watersports in the Mediterranean.  These watersports included sailing funboats and catamarans, sea kayaks, snorkeling on a coral reef and banana boating... not to mention the day spent at Aqualand waterpark!

We were lucky enough to have taken an excellent bunch of students who were brilliantly behaved all trip.  The weather was amazing all week. We had a fantastic trip!

They then went over to the Isle of Wight for a brisk 7 mile hike across the island. To find out more, have a look at a short video of Fairthorne, the photos on SharePoint and a video compilation of images: Right and Left.

SPORTS DAY

Tuesday 8th July was Sports Day. We had a very successful day, inspite of the rain! There were record-breaking performances from several students, including a Year 7 who broke the school record for his year group in long jump. Ironically, the former record holder, an ex-student of Arnewood, had come in for the day and was helping out in the long jump area!

The photos are now available on SharePoint. Please remember that your username must begin arnewood\ You can also see a compilation video of the photos.

INTERNATIONAL DAY

Monday 7th July was International Day at Arnewood. It was a non-uniform day, and the theme for lessons was 'China and the Olympics'.

Students experienced a wide range of activities from a variety of perspectives. This included dragon dancing, making fireworks and talking about Human Rights.

Click here for the Humanities SharePoint pages for International Day.

BOURNEMOUTH SCHOOLS CRICKET FINAL

The Year 7 Cricket team won the Bournemouth Schools cricket final on July 2nd at Dean Park in Bournemouth, beating Highcliffe in a really close game! We won the toss and elected to bat, scoring 95 runs for 6 wickets off 20 overs. Their reply was 93 for 7 wickets in the 20 overs.

The boys played brilliantly, and deserved their medals and the trophy.

Have a look at the video, or see the original photos on SharePoint.

YEAR 11 PROM

This year, the theme was The Oscars. As always, the streets were lined with onlookers as students arrived in style. It was a magical evening, with students dancing the night away. A memorable evening for us all. Have a look at a video compilation of the photos, or view the photos in SharePoint.

TEACHERS TV

Teachers in schools around the country will be learning more about Arnewood's Laptops4Learning scheme through a programme on Teachers TV. Part of the 15 minute video was filmed by students and teachers, showing students using laptops at home and at school. To complete the documentary, Teachers TV sent a team to the school to record interviews with staff and students.

The programme is being broadcast on several slots over the next few weeks, but can also be downloaded or viewed from the Teachers TV website.

REVISION RESOURCES

The exam season is upon us, and students at the top of the school are revising in earnest. The Science department has made a large number of exam papers available on SharePoint, for Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The RS pages are being used by students in Years 11, 12 and 13, both at Arnewood and around the country, with a record 25,000 page loads in one day this week! The History pages are as popular as ever, with games and resources for GCSE, AS and A2.

Remember to get plenty of sleep the night before, eat breakfast and drink lots of water!

THE BOOK OF EVERYTHING

Since January, over 30 students from years 7,8 and 9 have been working on the play 'The Book of Everything' by Peter Tabern as part of the prestigious National Theatre Connections Festival which the school first joined last year.  See the Arnewood photos. Miss Penny selected this exciting and thought-provoking adaptation from a choice of 10 contemporary plays written specifically for young people since it offered the opportunity to get lots of our 'budding thesps' involved whilst exploring challenging and emotional themes in an imaginative way.

Following 2 highly successful performances at school in April, on May 8th the show transfered to the Nuffield Theatre, Southampton for an evening performance on a professional stage. See the Nuffield Theatre photos. As well as having a Technical rehearsal, the cast enjoyed a Drama workshop led by theatre director, Louisa Fitzgerald who is currently working at The Globe, which focused on characterisation and movement. A truly fantastic day!

'I think the play was really good because it had lots of action and tension in it.' Rebekah, Year 7

FA CHARTER STANDARD FOOTBALL AWARD

Arnewood School PE department have just received redesignation of the Football Associations Charter Standard status.  The award is in recognition of the department's commitment to boys and girls football, both in curriculum time and after school.

'ONE OF THE MOST IMPROVED SCHOOLS IN THE COUNTRY'

As a Technology College, in its second phase of designation, Arnewood has improved its GCSE results steadily in the last 4 years, rising from 59% - 70%, 5 A*-C, a school best ever result in 2007.

Speaking at a ceremony in London, Elizabeth Reid, Chief Executive of the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust, said:

“I would like to congratulate these schools for achieving outstanding improvements to their GCSE results.  It is important that we recognise success in the education system as it is the produce of hard work, good leadership and innovative approaches to teaching and learning.  This is the success that enables more young people to reach their potential."

Mr Hummerstone, Headteacher of The Arnewood School, said: “We are delighted to be recognised for this work at a national level, particularly since we were also praised for our improvements in 2006 in relation to value added.”
