Key Facts:
"Nye" Bevan was the first Health Secretary appointed by the Labour government in 1946.
The Beveridge Report of 1942 had proposed a National Health Service to solve the major problems
facing public health as a result of the Second World War.
It proposed an NHS "free at the point of delivery" and available for all "from cradle to grave".
Bevan was the minister responsible for its introduction.
There was a lot of opposition from doctors who didn't want to be nationalised as they felt it would
lose them money.
Bevan was instrumental in winning over the BMA, convincing its members to join up.
