Period of History of Medicine: TWENTIETH CENTURY

The 20th Century saw some massive scientific breakthroughs. The two world wars saw improvisation lead to new treatments as well as forcing governments to tackle public health issues in order to maintain a strong and healthy nation. It saw the developments of new cures and huge advances in surgery and medical understanding as well as the way in which health care was funded and delivered.

Key Facts:

"Nye" Bevan was the first Health Secretary appointed by the Labour government in 1946.

The Beveridge Report of 1942 had proposed a National Health Service to solve the major problems

facing public health as a result of the Second World War.

It proposed an NHS "free at the point of delivery" and available for all "from cradle to grave".

Bevan was the minister responsible for its introduction.

There was a lot of opposition from doctors who didn't want to be nationalised as they felt it would

lose them money.

Bevan was instrumental in winning over the BMA, convincing its members to join up.
