Period of History of Medicine: ANCIENT ROME

The Romans created one of the greatest empires the world has ever seen, taking their way of life and medical knowledge throughout the Empire. Benefitting from the Egyptian and Greek knowledge, they improved public health with massive schemes such as the aquaducts as well as their understanding of anatomy through army surgeons. Their most famous doctor though was Galen, a former gladiator surgeon.

Key Facts:

Born in about 120 AD Galen studied at Alexandria in the former Egyptian Empire.

He trained to be a gladiator surgeon before becoming doctor to the emperor Marcus Aurelius.

He wrote hundreds of medical books that spread throughout the Empire.

As he was banned from dissecting humans, many of his ideas were based on animal dissection.

His most famous experiment was proving the brain controlled the body of a pig.

He developed the 4 Humours, suggesting the inbalance should be treated by using opposites.

His books and ideas lasted for over 1000 years.
