Period of History of Medicine: ANCIENT GREECE

The Ancient Greeks brought many new philosophies and concepts to the world, such as democracy. Whilst believing in supernatural treatments and causes of disease, the Greeks also came up with rational ideas that led to improvements in recording and sharing medical knowledge.

Key Facts:

Born in about 460 BC Hippocrates has been called the "Father of Medicine".

He encouraged doctors to move away from the supernatural, saying they should observe and record.

He said doctors should look for explanations of illness based upon their observations.

He encouraged doctor's to swear an oath pledging to put patients first ("The Hippocratic Oath").

His main theory was the 4 Humours (Blood, yellow bile, black bile and phlegm).

You became ill when these humours were out of balance.
