Period of History of Medicine: THE RENAISSANCE

Meaning "re-birth", the Renaissance is the period of history between the Middle Ages and the 17th century. It was a period where the power of the Church dwindelled, allowing people to challenge old ideas. Individuals such as Da Vinci and Galileo challenged ancient concepts, whilst new technology such as the printing press enabled new ideas to be spread quickly. This new confidence also meant that doctors challenged existing medical concepts, resulting in Galen's ideas being questioned after 1000 years.

Key Facts:

Born in 1514 Vesalius was a specialist in anatomy.

He became professor at Padua publishing "The Fabric of the Human Body" in 1543.

He produced very accurate drawings of human anatomy.

Dissecting humans was still banned, so he stole dead bodies from the morgue to dissect.

He proved that Galen was wrong over the human jaw bone and that blood could not flow through

the septum in the heart. Galen had based his ideas on animal dissection.

Vesalius' work was not initially widely accepted but he suggested doctors should challenge Galen.
